Amanda's Review on: ALICE IN APRIL
Alice in April is a really a good book.Alice is about to turn 13 and her dad and her Aunt Sally say that she going to be Woman of the House. Her mom died when she was little. As woman of the house Alice think that her dad and her brother Lester should go get a Physical.IF you want to know more about the book READ IT. Amanda S.-14

The best kids' book I've ever read
I'm only 12, but this is the best book of the hundreds I've read. Alice McKinley's aunt reminds her that she's almost 13 and will be Woman of the House soon. (Her mother died when she was four.) Alice gets a head start on her womanhood by cleaning the entire house, having her father and brother get physical checkups, and throwing a birthday bash for her father's fiftieth birthday. Besides that, she must survive the latest crisis at school: the boys are matching the girls' chest sizes with a state according to its mountains' heights! Perspective yet hilarious! My favorite book ever until the next Alice book comes out

I think I've run out of words to describe Alice books!!
Superb! Wonderful! Gorgeous! Extroidonary! Lovely! All right, guess not! This book provides an even FURTHER look into Alice's life and the characters--oh, the characters!--just pop even more. I feel like I'm standing right next to them! I found the topic of the pelvic exam for Elizabeth wonderful! Not many young adult fiction writers will even touch on those subjects that girls really need to know about. More sex talk and descriptions of a pelvic exam, so beware for tender minds who can not handle that information. These books seem to keep you blushing harder with every installment and that's really what we need in today's young adult fiction! Bravo, Phylis!

Blessed be!!

Star Wars Episode 1: Visual Dictionary (Star Wars)
Published in Paperback by Penguin Books Ltd (03 June, 1999)
Authors: David West Reynolds, Hans Jenssen, and Richard Chasemore
Average review score:

A visual treat for Star Wars fans
"Star Wars, Episode I: The Visual Dictionary" combines text by David West Reynolds with a wealth of excellent full-color photographs. Rather than rely on shots from the film, the book primarily uses still shots that appear to have been purposefully taken for a project like this. This was, in my opinion, a wise choice, since I have noticed that the photos in other movie tie-in books can sometimes be a bit murky. The photos here are crisp and colorful, and really allow you to analyze and enjoy the details.

The text comes in the form of easy-to-digest nuggets. The book covers characters, ships, weapons, clothing, robots, animals, and other elements from the movie. The text offers intriguing little tidbits of info about the SW universe (although I imagine that more devoted fans may argue about how "canonical" this info is).

A nice aspect of the book is the fact that barely glimpsed elements in the film are given loving attention here. For example, you can "meet" the members of the Jedi Council more intimately. I liked the comparative size chart of Naboo sea monsters. And the fashion-oriented will have a great time exploring the ornate costumes worn by Queen Amidala and others. Overall, this book is a lot of fun.

DK Strikes Back!
The Dorling-Kindersley Visual Dictionaries are all top-notch products, fascinating not only for children, but for adults, as well. The STAR WARS, EPISODE I addition to this line does not disappoint, with page after page of wonderful, detailed photographs of the people, things and places featured in the film. Everything, from lightsabers to battle droids to Darth Maul, is examined closely and exhaustively labeled.

The fun doesn't stop with the photographs, however. Written in close concert with Lucasfilm, the book provides greater insight into the film by providing information about even minor characters with little screen time. As a result, the next time readers watch EPISODE I, they'll find themselves recalling these tidbits, and enjoying the movie even more than they did before.

Readers, adults and children alike, will find this Visual Dictionary a delight, and it will rarely stay on the shelf. Fun to read cover-to-cover, or just to leaf through, the book is an excellent addition to any STAR WARS fan's collection, and comes very close to being a must-have.

Wonderful Visual Treat!
This slim volume, published in 1999 to coincide with the release of Episode I, is actually a treasure for Star Wars fans who are interested in the details of the characters, lifeforms, and technology from that "galaxy far, far away...." Lavishly illustrated and wonderfully written by David West Reynolds. Also worth getting are The Star Wars Visual Dictionary and the Star Wars Episode II Visual Dictionary.

Star Wars: Episode 1 Incredible Cross-Sections
Published in Hardcover by DK Publishing (May, 1999)
Authors: David West Reynolds, Hans Jenssen, Richard Chasemore, and Dorling Kindersley Publishing
Average review score:

Just the best technical reference book on Episode-One
I consider the book a complete overview of the design history of the Star Wars Univers. The drawings detail is just great and there is a wealth of information too that bring us back to the origins of many of the familiar vehicles and ships of the original trilogy. The fold-out of the Droid Control Ship is amazing but the other drawings are no less impresive. I strongly recomend this book to everyone interested in technical detail even if you are not a Star Wars fan.

Great for all Star Wars fans
Just like the first Incredible Cross Sections, this book amazes with page after page of intricate cutaways of almost every ship in Episode 1. The foldout of the Droid Control Ship, much like the foldout of the Death Star in the origionl, is great. Definitely recommeded, even if your not a Star Wars fantaic

Almost as good as the other Cross section book
The artwork and detail in this book is mind blowing. However, since few of the Episode 1 vehicles are as intriguing as the ships in the original trilogy, this book is slightly less interesting, in my view. That is not to say it isn't essential if you're into technical artwork or Star Wars as a whole. It's probably best to get them both, the older book and this new one. I have one question to DK, however: Where's the Star Trek cross sections book?

The Boys Start The War The Girls Get Even
The name of this book is The Boys Start the War/ The Girls Get Even by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. This book is a really good book. The Hatford boys are playing tricks on their new neighbors the Malloy girls. Now the Malloys girls are really mad and have to get back at them. The Malloy girls are Eddie (whose real name is Edith Ann but hates it) 11 years old, Beth who is ten and Caroline who is eight, but is in third grade. The Hatford boy's names and ages are Josh and Jake who are 11 (they are twins.), Wally is nine and Peter who is seven. The Hatford boys and the Malloy girls are playing tons of tricks on each other. To find out what happens read The Boys Start the War/ The Girls Get Even.

THIS BOOK WAS ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS!
The Boys Start the War; The Girls Get Even

I especially like these books since it was the type of book that has a boys vs. girls sort of thing, also with revenge in it and I happen to really like books like that. These books are about the Hatford boys vs. the Malloy girls. It all started when the Hatford boys, Josh, Jake, Wally, and Peter, best friends, moved out and the Malloy sister moved into their house in stead of boys like the Hatford boys thought it would be. The Malloy sisters are Caroline, Beth and Edith Ann (or as she preferred it in the book, Eddie). The pranks and tricks on each other started when the Hatford boys decided that by making the girls so miserable they'd want to go back to where they came from, Ohio. However the boys didn't think that the girls would get revenge on the Hatford boys prank on them. So, begins the war. Then in the second book, since these two books are put into one, it goes on about more tricks, pranks, and ways of getting revenge on each other. Some of the tricks are when the Malloy girls take their revenge against the Hatford boys, when Caroline Malloy got to be a queen in a play the fourth grade were having, and Wally Hatford was her footman. Then a plot was formed, for Halloween night, and it was in store for the Malloy girls from the Hatford boys. I thought that all these pranks that were done, were really funny, and some you can even consider doing yourself, if you want to get revenge or even somebody! I found this book absolutely hilarious, and full of life. I would recommend this books towards everyone, but especially those who like books that are girls vs. boys, or ones with revenge, or books that are funny. To rate this book, I give it a perfect five stars.

i think everyone laughs inside...
i definetly did.the characters are so realistic, beth(named by the boys as the weirdo)and her stephen king/r.l. stine books, eddie (called the whomper)and her baseball skills-the only thing that impresses the boys(other than the tricks the girls manage to pull), caroline(the crazy) and her actressy-melodramatic way of facing the world head-on.meanwhile their favorite ememies, josh, jake, willis, and peter are determined to move the girls out of their old friends house in hopes of having their friends move back in. the book is so funny, from caroline's pretend death to the guys trapping the girls on the roof in a rainstorm, that you wish the ending would never come so you could just read it forever.thats the way it is with good books, though.anyway,i can't wait untill the next one comes out and i definetly recommend this book and all others that follow it.

Stack-n-Whackier Quilts (Another Magic Stack-n-Whack(tm) Book)
Published in Paperback by Collector Books (August, 2001)
Author: Bethany S. Reynolds
Average review score:

Amazing! Neat technique! Beautiful projects! Buy it!!!!
This is the first "stack n whack" book that I've purchased. I bought it because of the butterfly quilt pattern, but there are many other projects that will catch your eye and send you running to the fabric store! The basic principle of this technique is to utilize the repetition of patterns within fabric in a consistent way to create "kaleidoscopic" effects in your quilt design. It does take a little careful reading to understand the technique, and how the "dynamics" of the fabric will matter to the design, but the book has very good directions, and great photos.

All in all there are 12 designs which demonstrate 3 different techniques:
1 - Stack n Whack, which is the "simplest" form
2 - Mirror image magic, which relies on using both the right and wrong side of the fabric for a different effect
3 - Stack n select, a more selective method of cutting to provide more control to the end design.

The variability in the appearance that can be achieved through the use of one fabric and this technique is amazing. I can't wait to start my first project!

Neat new ideas
I recently read the new book Stack and Whackier and really liked it. The designs are fresh and new and I made the cover quilt easily and fast from the directions in the book. I used an oriental print for the box tops and it is stunning. I also perused the rest of the designs as I was looking for a class to teach. The designs are quite varied and most wouldn't be classed as Stack and Whack upon first glance. I especially liked the classification of the designs as Easy, Intermediate or Advanced although I made the cover quilt which was classified as Intermediate but which I thought wasn't hard at all. Anyone with some knowledge of quilting techniques should have no trouble with that one. A must for the library of anyone who likes the Stack and Whack technique.

Another Wonderful Book
This book continues with Bethany's wonderful methods of transforming fabric into great kaleidoscopic blocks. The directions are extremely well written for use, even by people who have never done Stack&Whack quilt blocks before.

I love the new shapes that Bethany is using, since I can use smaller amounts of my fabrics with some of the easier shapes.

I'll be amazing my friends soon with some more wonderful quilts from these patterns!!

Jetty Man

Average review score:

"When's the Movie? When's the next book?"
"JETTY MAN" When's the Movie? When's the next book? Once a reader reads "JETTY MAN", he will be asking for more! More of Jason, more of Mayport, more of the Tree, and, yes, more of the captivating journeys into mystery and suspense. Only gifted writers invite the reader to become part of the story. Once the reader starts reading "JETTY MAN" he becomes part of Mayport, Florida, a small fishing village, with all its superstition, sex, and violence. Dr. Reynolds has a style that puts him a cut above other authors with his ability to capture the natural dialogue of Northeast Florida. Where do our next great authors come from? MAYPOR

JETTY MAN- A POWERFUL BOOK
G.W. Reynolds will captivate you until the end in JETTY MAN and then have you yearning for more. Through his characters, Reynolds captures your heart and soul and rips them open with the bare-naked truth of how it was growing up in a small southern village, known as Mayport. Jason, the young jetty man and in which these stories center around, puts you in touch with powerful emotions of those childhood fears, first experiences, tragedies, triumphs, pains and love & lust. Through the realisms of these emotions that Reynolds delivers, you can't help but find yourself empathizing with many of them from your own little experiences in life. From the beginning in High Pitched Hum the demons of life are unleashed upon Jason and continue throughout the stories of Duckin' and Lunch Rock. You will be intrigued to see how this character endures these evil ropes of life and allows them to help him grow as strong as that infamous oak tree. JETTY MAN is a powerful book. The brutally honest stories are so vividly written that you are spellbound until the end and for days after that. Thank you Mr. Reynolds for sharing your gift of storytelling.

You'll want to be a charactor in this book.
Jetty Man is a story that everyone reads then wants to relate to one or more of the characters or wants to become one of the characters. Reynolds is a genius with his writing. In the first chapter, High Pitched Hum, we read of a young boy, Jason who should not have survived his childhood with violence and death surrounding him. In the second part, Duckin, Jason proves his manhood by playing the bloody game of Duckin', he also proves he is a survivor. Even though all the odds are against him, Jason can overcome his dark, bleak past. In the last part, Lunch Rock, Jason is not only a survivor, he is a hero and a real man's man. Everyone wants to save Jason from his turbulent past, but at the same time everyone wants to befriend Jason. women, especially, want Jason. Jason is a real woman's type of man and he has no control over the effect he has on them and their hungry desire to please him sexually. Reynolds has left his readers starving for more. This should definitely be made in to a movie because Reynolds has captivated his audience as if they were in the story themselves.

Shiloh Season
Published in Audio Cassette by Bantam Books-Audio (November, 1997)
Authors: Phyllis Reynolds Naylor and Michael Moriarty
Average review score:

This is a pretty good book, and I recommend it to all ages.
This is a book report on Shiloh Season by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. I am doing it for my reading class. This is the second of three books about Shiloh a dog. It is about a kid who worked for a man named Jud to get Shiloh from him. When the kid gets Shiloh, he treats him well, unlike Jud who treated him bad. When Jud gives Shiloh to the kid he gets lonely and starts drinking a lot. He gets drunk and tries to run over Shiloh but instead runs off the road and crashes. People try to be nice to Jud because he crashed and got hurt bad. Finally, one night the boy visits Jud with Shiloh. When they get there for the first time Shiloh licked Jud's hand. I recommend this book to people of all ages.

A heart-warming and wonderful read!
In the sequel to Shiloh, Shiloh Season, the award-winning author, Phyllis Reynolds Naylor, once again beautifully portrays the rural life of West Virginia and the love a young boy, Marty, has for an abused dog named Shiloh.

In this sequel, Marty is faced with the conflict of losing Shiloh to the dog's original owner Judd Travers. Judd is known throughout the small community of Friendly, West Virgina for not only being a drunk but also for abusing his dogs.

I would recommend reading the first Shiloh before reading Shiloh Season. However, Naylor gives background information in chapter 1 to refresh the reader's memory from what happened in the first of the 3 novels. Therefore, if you choose not to read the first Shiloh then you will not be totally lost when picking up with Shiloh Season.

Marty worked for Judd in the first Shiloh in order to earn the right to own the abused beagle Shiloh as his very own. However, in Shiloh Season, Judd continuously taunts Marty in wanting Shiloh back as his dog again. What could possibly make this situation worse? Judd is drinking heavier now than ever before and backing up his threats of taking Shiloh with gunshots at Marty!

Marty learns many important lessons throughout the course of the story. He not only learns the different responsibilities that accompanies raising a dog but he also learns that truth and honesty are always the best policy even if it means losing something that you love. Marty also learns that forgiving someone is sometimes very hard but a very crucial lesson when growing up.

As a teacher, I would definitely recommend this book for 10 year old students and older to read independently or for teachers and parents to read aloud to their children of the same age level. I can't wait to read Naylor's Saving Shiloh which is the third book of the Shiloh trilogy. I also hope to see future books about Shiloh to continue the series.

This is a good book.
It all first started when Shiloh was being abused by his owner Judd Travers. So Marty tried to take him away but after an attack from a German Shepherd, Shiloh was hidden no more. His parents found out ing and worse Judd Travers Shiloh Season was a book about a boy named Marty and a dog named Shioh, and a man that Marty despises named Judd Travers. In this book Marty feels like he did not get Shioloh fair and square. He thinks that the only reason that he got Shiloh was because he saw Judd do something that he was not allowed to do. Because of this Marty keeps on getting the feeling that Judd wants Shiloh back. But Marty loves Shiloh and doesn't want to give him up. There is a lot of conflict going around with Judd and Marty. Since Marty had taken away Shiloh from Judd he has been drinking and drinking ever since. Marty is worried that since he drinks and is violent he might come after Marty or even worse come after Shiloh and kill him. Marty fears for his life. He has to look over his shoulder every second of his life.

Alice in Rapture, Sort of

The Summer of the First Boyfriend
This is an overall sweet book. As the second book in the excellent Alice McKinley series, ALICE IN RAPTURE, SORT OF picks up where the first book left off. In other words it chronicles Alice through her summer vacation after 6th grade, the summer that her father dubs the "summer of the first boyfriend." This was the first Alice book that I read (I did so at a book store while I was in New York, because I had nothing else to do), and I enjoyed it emmensly. I like it mostly because it's honest.

After Alice and Patrick get together everything isn't teriffic. Interesting, yes, but way more complicated than the way things were in the beginning, when they were just friends. Alice has to worry about what she eats (so that Patrick won't get any surprises when he kisses her), what an appropriate birthday present for a boyfriend is (what is Lucite, anyway??), and, in the end, whether or not being more than friends is worth all the strife (something I myself think about daily -- blech).

Recommended for all people who enjoy reading realistic books about girls growing up, and especially for anyone who has read and ejoyed any of the other Alice McKinley books.

Outstanding!Couldn't be better!
I loved this book!I read 5 other books so far about the adventures of Alice.I've got to say,Phillis Naylor is an incrediable author! In my binder right now,i have Reluctantly Alice and her newest book.I just love them!I just wanted to say thanx to her because i can't stop reading!

This book was about a girl who faces real life problems.
This was an awesome book! I recomend other people to read it or have someone read it to them. It tells about how a pre-teen deals with problems in funny and strange, yet serious ways. It's funny parts include Alice's friend Pamela loosing her swim suit top at the beach, having Pamela's boyfriend find her up lift spandex ahh bra and Alice leaving her purse in the car on a date. A serious part was when Alice wanted to break up with her boyfriend and be "Special Friends." If you read this I hope you enjoy it alot

Judy Moody
Published in Paperback by Candlewick Press (August, 2002)
Authors: Megan McDonald and Peter Reynolds
Average review score:

A Great Book for Girls
Hey! If you're bored and can't find a good book, look for this: Judy Moody was in a mood. Not a Good mood.A Bad mood by:Megan Mcdonald. Let me tell about the main character : Judy Moody. She is a girl who isn't too girly, if she was too girly, she would hate venis fly traps, plus she wouldn't have a best friend who is a boy. To tell the truth I think I'm telling too much about this book. I might tell you everything so I'm just telling you this....(this is the part that is funny) when Judy got...... well uses a fake hand, in a toilet for her brother, but when he found out I giggled in my mind. Like I was saying, I have to get to the point: read it it's a great book for girls, but if you don't like it you might be a boy.The reason i like it is because it's realistic. I don't like too funny books, plus I didn't know, but the Moodys (Judy's main family) lives in Virginia. Well, this is a really great book. If you want to know, just read it!

Funny and Practical!
This first book in the Judy Moody Series is very funny to read and the illustrations fit right along with the "mood swings" of Judy Moody.( Get where the name came from?) Judy starts 3rd grade with a bad mood but when she learns they are going to be doing a collogue about themselves her imaginative juices are surfaced.

I laughed a lot during this book and it is really a great book to enjoy with a family. I especially liked the part about the T.P Club( I won't tell you what T.P. stands for!). That was hilirious. I recommend this book to all ages because everyone deserves a good laugh and it doesn't have to be within the 6-10 age limit because ... I loved it!

Buy this book you will never put it down!
I am a fifth grade student at Waldron Mercy Academy (CLS).

I would give this series five stars. The Judy Moody series are the best books ever. The best book from the series just has to be "Judy Moody is in a mood. Not a good mood. A bad mood." Judy Moody lives in Virgina. Summer vacation is over way to soon. Judy Moody's going to be a third grader this year. She hates the first day of school. Everyone always comes back with a shirt from their vacation spot, but Judy didn't go anywhere. She remembers the shark she brought from the supermarket and gets out a white shirt and writes: " I ate Shark." Her best friend is already waiting at the bus stop with a shirt that says: "Loch Ness Monster." For summer vacation he went to Busch Gardens and rode roller coasters. Her little brother Stink, is in second grade and thinks he knows everything. Judy Moody is in a bad mood and everybody knows it.
